Alison Howson
Joyous colour from the heart.
I have always been highly aware of colour – the great variety in seemingly everyday things, and how a change in light can affect colour and mood. My works are generally in colours that are uplifting to my spirit.
I get completely absorbed in the interplay between colours juxtaposed on a blank field.
From apparently random positioning of colour, I delight to see the emergence of beautiful creations, with just colour and texture.
I work in acrylic, and add a variety of textural elements – rice papers, foils, and ochres. Many of my works employ additional use of metallic or iridescent finishes and accents to highlight the sensuous nature of the works. Inks are also used to highlight areas of the work.
I am currently exploring different results that can be achieved from using a range of tools, not just brushes, to apply the paint. Many of the works are multi-layered, with texture applied first and then covered over – to reveal a new dimension.
